NIGHT HEAD eng subs
– fine, I’ll do it myself

When I initially started working on the entire NIGHT HEAD research project, I said that I probably wouldn’t sub it myself. In the end, translating the episode scripts for my synopses organically turned into subbing it, since I wanted to watch it with other people. Still, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to share those subs with the wider internet – it’s my first ever subbing project, and it’s quite daunting to consider your own work being “out there” in that way. 

I say that it turned into a subbing project organically, however, that doesn’t mean it was easy. This has been a massive endeavor – hundreds of hours, easily, all while teaching myself as I went. Readers of my synopses will know that I used the official screenplays for my translations, but the actual process of subbing things was completely new to me! In future I might make a post about my process, but suffice to say, I started with next no knowledge and am only now going back to QC (completely overhaul, really) the earliest episodes to be up to my current standards.¹ 

I’ve been waffling over whether or not to release these eng subs for quite a while, actually. I’ve finally decided to share them because it’s exactly that – sharing. NIGHT HEAD has become such a large part of my own brain² that it started to feel ridiculous that more people in english-speaking spaces haven’t watched it. I love this dumb show! I want to talk to people about it! I think it’s great and terrible and wonderful and I want other people to see it! I want to share the sad, strange journey of these lads who feel like my adopted sons – and I hope you’ll come along with us. Once I get things started with posting the english subs, please spread the word!³ I’m so excited to see how people engage with the show, and I want to hear everyone’s thoughts!

The one thing being held up is my synopses – episodes 20 & 21 are heavy-duty on the pathos, and I’m not sure when I’d like to release my posts on them. They’re in the works, certainly, but I wouldn’t blame people for not wanting to read them until the episode subtitles are released! So, scheduling is up in the air on that one. Otherwise, I’m planning to start releasing the episode subtitles weekly after I’ve gotten through my first round of cleanup. I’m currently on episode 16 of 21,⁴ so episode 1 should hopefully be available soon!⁵

Drama-Otaku didn’t respond to my emails about not having access to their pages for adding a subtitle provider page or adopting a show, so we’ll see how that goes… ↩︎
